Got a new job? No.
He came to me with talk of really simple website troubleshooting almost entirely devoted to help with HTML. I’m no HTML master but I’d like to think I’m quite proficient when it comes to most HTML stuff and what I don’t know I can quickly learn by searching online and retaining it. Simple enough. I was a shoe-in!
And then Bill had his interview for the job first and they didn’t get technical hardly at all and mostly focused on customer service. Customer service? Shit, I’m a master customer servicer! I’ve been doing this stuff since I was sixteen and know how to please people while getting work done. Put me in front of a customer and I’m smooth as hell.
100% job. Right?
Except when I sit down for the interview I start getting a lot more questions in areas I don’t really know and didn’t expect. Goes straight into network connections and their prodding questions to find out how much I know about networking. I know maybe one step above someone who’s never touched a computer. My main method of troubleshooting goes as follows:
1. Check to make sure everything is plugged in.
2. Power cycle.
3. Open up Internet Options and give the impression I know what I’m looking for. Change settings if things still aren’t working.
4. Power cycle.
5. Cross fingers.
6. Go back into Internet Options, change settings back to how they were before I fucked things up more.
7. Feign complete ignorance and pretend the problem is due to the internet service and not the settings.
8. Profit!
As you can see my eight steps to success aren’t the sort that would usually land a job. Suffice it to say I felt rather dumb during the interview.
Let’s just say that wasn’t the only downfall during the interview process.
In the end I got the canned, “Thanks for wasting our time. Fuck you on your way out.” “Thanks for coming in. We’ve got a lot of applicants through the rest of the day. We’ll get a hold of you in the next couple days to let you know our decision.”
It’s really weird how I haven’t heard from them. And I was so sure that after floundering like a fool that they’d be all over wanting me on their team. Oh well.
That does mean I’ll likely still look for another job or at least something for a part-time job.

Bummer dude! But, guess what. At least you tried which is better than NOT trying at all! Matt doesn’t have a job yet, and things are going better than I thought with that. I thought we were going to be screwed honestly. What with the mortgage and bills and stuff, but things always seem to work out…even if you don’t think they will. :D I’m sure you will find something good eventually!
