Facebook

What makes us reluctant to jump on bandwagons? Some people are all for it. I know I was especially so when I was younger and was willing to sign up on just about anything.

Now? Not so much.

Whatever the case I’ve finally been bitten by the Facebook bug and have been using it for a week or two now and enjoy it entirely too much. There’s not a lot that happens between others and myself on there but I’ve been amused mainly due to the applications, most notably Scrabulous (aka Scrabble) and whatever the book one is that I use. Being able to list books I’ve read, books that I’m currently reading, and also books that I want to read. The last I use mostly as a helpful guide as to what I actually own and haven’t read yet, though I believe I’ve added a few titles that I haven’t yet purchased. Not sure on that one.

Lastly I’ve had way too much fun being able to look at only local profiles (those in the Portland, OR network) with different “favorites.” Seeing others that have Igby Goes Down in their profiles has provided a good list of people with good movie tastes! I’ve messaged a few in an attempt to possibly spark some conversation and the only person to reply is the one I least expected a reply from since I had no intention of replying to anything sent back my way. Oh well.

Of course it’s also totally awesome that there’s an application that works with Wordpress (this blog software) that makes it so new entries show up linked on my profile. That’s handy, though I don’t think many people realize I’ve been updating this a fair amount recently. Doesn’t stop me from writing.

My new phone is actually a brick

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

If it were literally a brick I could at least use it as a doorstop but it’s too light.

Out of the package I plug it in to charge and away we go. The screen lights up, says Verizon Wireless, and roughly every minute or so following it’ll quickly fade-out-fade-in with the same Verizon Wireless. I just assumed that’s what it did when charging, or at least did when charging from a phone-turned-off state. Maybe that isn’t the case?

After over five hours of charging I figured it had to be done but no amount of button pushing changed anything. The power button doesn’t do anything. I can’t even turn it off unless I remove the battery. Maybe it needs activated and it’s “locked up” until then or something? I was just guessing at this point.

I call up Verizon Wireless and go through the activation stuff. She tells me to turn it on and dial something. I told her it’s on and nothing happens when I hit any buttons. Alright, she says, then turn it off and turn it back on. I ask how because holding the power button doesn’t get me anywhere. This is where things start getting into that awkward, “Uh oh, does he have a broken phone?” stage. I suggest I remove the battery. She agrees that it’s the only course of action at this point. I remove the battery, put it back in, press power and instantly get the screen that doesn’t change (aside from occasional fading in and out). She puts me on hold to discuss the matter with people.

She comes back, apologizes, my phone is dead. No idea why but it’s dead. Quickest option is to bring it into a Verizon store. Thankfully there’s one about mile or two from here so when Corey gets home I’ll ask if he wants to head out real quick and swap the phone.

Let’s hope I get a working phone by the end of the evening, eh?
